How To Discover (Or Reignite) Your Passions

A Passionate Life is a Meaningful Life

I love this quote by Maya Angelou, “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” Today, I want to talk to you about passions. I believe that passions are a necessary component to living a meaningful life. They make life worth living. Do you make time for your passions?

As a mom, I’ve found that making time for pursuing my passions is no easy feat. But what I’ve learned is that when I don’t make time for the things that light me up and make me feel alive, I feel less than. When I’m all work and no play, my spirit is drained.

Do you know what I mean?

As a child, my biggest passion was reading. As a teenager, my passion turned to writing poems. I remember spending hours lost in crafting poems, so they conveyed exactly what I wanted them to.

My newest passion is this blog. I love everything about blogging from researching and writing new posts to creating images and planning my editorial calendar.

But there were many years when I didn’t pursue my passions.

Thinking back, these were also the years where my anxiety and low-grade depression became more prevalent. I suspect that lack of self-care and not pursuing my passions were a big factor in how I felt during those years.

But with law school, a career, and babies at home, I didn’t think it was possible to pursue “me time” activities. It wasn’t until I finally got intentional about planning my life that I started to make time to pursue my passion for writing.

Are You Pursuing Your Passions?

If you are not currently pursuing your passions, I challenge you to start pursuing them now.

You may be thinking that you don’t even know what your passions are anymore. If that’s the case, here are some questions to ask yourself to help you discover or reignite your passions.

  • Is there anything that you love to do right now?
  • What did you love to do as a child? As a teenager? As a young adult?
  • What do you dream about?
  • What are your hobbies?
  • What are your talents?
  • Is there anything you had wanted to pursue, but never found time to do?

Make A List Of Everything That Excites You

If you’re still having a hard time figuring out what you are passionate about, try making a list of everything that excites you.

Write out why these things excite you. Then think about how you can make time in your life to pursue them.

The truth is that you will never find time to pursue your passions. You have to make time to do so. This may require getting other people involved, like your spouse or a babysitter.

But discovering your passions is a worthwhile pursuit. So I encourage you to make time for your passions.

I’d love to hear about how you are pursuing your passions in the comments section below.
