Quick and Easy Classic Macaroni and Cheese

Comfort Food Recipe

Who doesn’t love homemade macaroni and cheese? Well, today I’m giving you my easy to make classic macaroni and cheese recipe. This is one of my kids’ favorite meals (and one of my husband’s and my favorites, too!). This family friendly recipe is also great to make for potluck events or for kids at dinner parties when you know the kids won’t be eating the fancy dinner you’re serving to the other adults.

This quick and easy Classic Macaroni and Cheese recipe is sure to be a hit with your kids. It’s also the perfect dish to bring to a potluck.

Growing up I ate a lot of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. I loved it and I couldn’t get enough of it. But when I met my husband and he introduced me to his homemade macaroni and cheese recipe (a family recipe handed down from his mother), I never had another bowl of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese again. The only problem with my husband’s recipe is that it would take us up to 2 hours to make it. After playing around with the recipe, I found that I could cut that time in half by purchasing shredded cheese, mixing the cheese and pasta right in the baking pan and baking the dish at a slightly higher temperature.

Hope you enjoy this recipe with your family! Even my son, who claims to hate cheese, loves this recipe.

Classic Macaroni and Cheese

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Cook Time: 30 minutes

Total Time: 1 hour

Yield: 6-8 servings

Serving Size: 1 Cup

  • 16 ounce bag of small elbow macaroni
  • 10 ounces of shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 8 ounces of shredded parmesan cheese
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • garlic powder
  • salt
  • pepper

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Cook the macaroni as directed on the package.
  3. While you are cooking the macaroni, melt the butter in a medium sized sauce pan over medium heat. Once it's melted, turn the stove down to low-medium heat.
  4. Add in the flour a little at a time while stirring constantly.
  5. Once you have a nice thick, bubbly sauce, you can add in about 1 cup of milk. Then, you'll want to turn the stove up to medium heat and wait for the milk to start to simmer.
  6. When it starts to simmer you can start adding in the cheeses. I usually add in handfuls and stir until the cheese melts. When the sauce starts getting too thick I add in a little more milk until all of the cheese is melted. Stir constantly during the melting process or else you'll burn the sauce.
  7. When you have a nice, thick cheesy sauce you can add in the spices. I always add about a teaspoon of garlic powder but some people like a little less garlic flavor. I then add salt and pepper to taste.
  8. When the pasta is done, drain it and pour it into a large greased baking dish. 13x9 inches works best.
  9. Then add in the cheese mixture and stir to cover the macaroni.
  10. Put the backing dish uncovered in the oven for 25-35 minutes, just until the top starts to brown.
  11. Remove from the oven and let sit for about 5-10 minutes and serve warm. That's it. Enjoy!
