The joy of the season is upon us and what better way to celebrate than with a warm cup of hot chocolate. I made this rich and creamy chocolate chip hot cocoa with my kids one recent afternoon when I realized I didn’t have any hot chocolate mix but did have a huge bag of chocolate chips. I wasn’t quite sure how it would turn out but I knew it was a hit when my older son said “this is the way hot chocolate is supposed to taste!”
This is a fun holiday hot chocolate recipe to enjoy with your family while you’re decorating the Christmas tree or reading Christmas books to your children. It’s also a family friendly recipe that you can make with your kids. I try to get my children involved in cooking as much as possible. But that wasn’t always the case.
The mess made by my children in the kitchen use to make my heart pound and my focus was always on the clean up I’d have to attend to when the fun was done. But when I finally realized how much joy it brings my little guys when they’re able to help mom out in the kitchen, my heart softened and I began to relax a little and take delight in the precious time we get to spend together cooking. Children really do love to help and more importantly, they love to spend time with you, and the mess is just a reminder of those precious moments.
So get your kids involved in the kitchen. There’s also the added benefit that their spouses will thank you for it later on in life. With the hot cocoa recipe, my older son helped with whisking the hot cocoa and both my children had fun adding whipped cream and sprinkles to their special treat. I personally like adding marshmallows to hot chocolate, but each to his own. I hope you and your children enjoy it!
